Sub-Modalities are the special sensory qualities perceived by each of the 5
senses ("representaional systems".)
For example if you were remembering a pleasurable learning experience
you may recall a picture in your mind of the learning environment. Where
is the picture located in space? That is a sub-modality. Is it in colour or
black & white? That is a sub-modality. Where are the sounds located in
and around your mind? That is a sub-modality. What feelings are
associated with this memory? That is a sub-modality. And so on for all the
different characteristics of the memory.
Below are charts that list sub-modalities for each of the senses:

In NLP we work alot with submodalities. We shift submodalities from negative things to positive. We ellicite strategies to become motivated and use sobmodalities too (i.e. in shifting the pictures in the place in front of us, before our inner eye, where we place things and events that we enjoy doing), etc. etc.
